Slate Foods partners with a consortium of farms, processors and small logistics companies to make local beef and other farm products available in all regions through the state. We support as many local economies as we can. We design our beef production map by region so that there is less travel for the cattle.

How and Why We Began…

The Five Pound Dilemma

In 2008, we attended a seminar held by a talented physician who presented the details of a dangerous new problem - antibiotic resistance infections due to the unprecedented levels of antibiotics in our livestock. To illustrate, the speaker proceeded to dump a 5 pound bag of flour as representation of the amount of antibiotics which any child born in the year 2000 or later would consume in their lifetime if they continued to eat commercial beef raised on a diet of growth-promoting antibiotics in feed, water, etc. In 2012, we produced our first pound of NYS beef from animals who were raised free of growth-promoting antibiotics and hormones. In 2017 the FDA banned the use of antibiotics for growth promotion but many farms still practice herd-wide administration for prevention of infection. Today, we source all of our livestock from farms practicing advanced, on-farm practices such as selective dry cow therapy which can reduce on-farm antibiotics by 75%. 10 years later, we have realized our goals and we are committed to working with farmers, veterinarians and advocates on further promoting this vital effort.
